About Abergavenny.net
The first version of Abergavenny.net was published way back in 1999. We realised there was a need for an Abergavenny website that not only conveyed some real enthusiasm for the town but was also regularly updated. Since then the website has been through several metamorphoses and this is now version 5. We estimate that over 2,000 hours (mostly unpaid) has been spent in publishing Abergavenny.net with over 200 hours spread over 4 months (Nov` 2006 - Mar` 2007) in producing the website you are looking at now.
If It Costs Money To Produce Why Go To All The Trouble?
That is a good question. Abergavenny.net started out for purely the love of the town and area but has now reached the point that `We have spent this much time, it would be a shame to stop now`. Besides, this website gets a lot of traffic. Over 25,000 visitors requesting 95,000 pages (300,000 hits) every month. More information on website statistics

What New Facilities Have We Installed?
With this new version we thought long and hard about our visitors experience along with Accessibility. We wanted it to be easier to use for everyone so we have have made sure the code we have written meets with the approval of the W3C World Wide Web Consortium. The W3C is an international consortium where Member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards.
For those with visual deficit we have used a piece of technology called `javascript` to implement a `High Contrast Style` facility that allows the user to switch the background colour from white to black and the text from black to yellow making every page easier to see. We have also allowed the user to increase the size of the font using their browser settings. Unfortunately, too many websites set the font size to a certain size disabling this level of control by the user. In all honesty, we have been guitly of this.
In line with W3C recommendations every graphic or image on this website uses `alt` tags which allows software, such as screen readers, know what the image is about even if someone can`t actually see it. Also, with the exception of the `Tell a friend` feature, we don`t use pop-up boxes or open new windows when linking to other pages or websites.
There is also a `printer friendly` option on every page enabling visitors to print the pages without the photos and graphics saving valuable ink.
From A Commercial Point Of View
We are very grateful for the support of a number of local businesses who `subscribe` to this website adding valuable financial help in running Abergavenny.net. In return we have increased the size of adverts for these subscribers, We have also installed a facility allowing the owners of these pages to edit them via a web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox etc). This means less work on our part and better service for them.
We also provide quarterly reports on the amount of traffic experienced by each subscribers directory on Abergavenny.net along with the number of referrals sent to subscribers own websites, providing feedback.
