Fancy hats aplenty as Ladies Day comes to Abergavenny
Abergavenny Chronicle - 1st July 2004
THE ‘Galavanting Grannies’ decided to do it again, and continue their ongoing tradition to recreate the sights and sounds of Ascot in Abergavenny.
The ladies, including Miriam Mc Isaac, managed to successfully replicate the atmosphere of the Royal Ascot Ladies day in her back garden in Abergavenny. Surpassing the standards set by last year’s event, this year the group assembled in the back garden at Miriam Mc Isaac’s home, dressed impeccably and sporting the type of extravagant hats and dresses one has come to associate with the prestigious annual race course event. The ladies sipped champagne and enjoyed karaoke from the comfort of the Gazebo in the garden, which was elaborately decked with balloons and other decorations. This day was particularly special as some younger faces were introduced to the group. The youngest lady pictured is Miriam’s great grand daughter, baby Summer, who is accompanied by her son Scott’s triplets.
It should be noted that Mrs Mc Isaac provided a wonderful occasion that was appreciated by all involved, and that the ladies will certainly be looking forward to next year’s attempt to bring Ascot to Abergavenny.

Residents at Victoria Court, Abergavenny, also turned to Ascot for a fundraising event when they joined forces to raise much needed funds for the Noah’s Ark Appeal.
Donning ‘fancy hats and sipping fancy drink’s, the residents held their own ‘Ladies Day at Ascot’ with all proceeds raised going towards the new children’s hospital in Cardiff.
With the help of an auction, raffle, and entertainment from the Bufton Brothers, they were able to hand over a cheque for £300.20 to Lyn Jones, chairman of trustees at Noah’s Ark Appeal.
Victoria Court scheme manager, Barbara Challenor, thanked everyone for their hard work, and paid special tribute to scheme cleaner Gill Smith for providing refreshments.
