Local peace campaigners fight against Iraq war
Abergavenny Chronicle - 6 February 2003
MONMOUTH MP Huw Edwards is one of ten Welsh Labour MP’s who have written to Prime Minister, Tony Blair,
expressing concerns about the possible consequences of a war against Iraq.
Speaking following a public meeting in Monmouth organised by the Gwent Peace and Justice Group, Mr Edwards said, “I urge
the current diplomatic strategies through the UN Security Council to be continued, to achieve disarmament but, also,
to avoid war that could be extremely costly in terms of human life and suffering, its impact on security in the Middle
East and beyond, and in hardening the attitudes of many people in the Muslim world against the West.”
Members of the Gwent Peace and Justice Group have a few places left to travel to the anti-war demonstration in London on
February 15. For more information call Ruth Iles on 01873 856168.
Mr Edwards said he appreciated “Tony Blair’s success in persuading the United States to work through
the United Nations,” and said the MPs had written to request that Mr Blair, “reaffirms this approach and makes
clear that the British Government would not support unilateral action by the United States against Iraq.”
Mr Edwards said the group of ten MPs did not believe that military action would be justified even if the UN
inspectors did find evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, or evidence of the
regime’s failure to comply with resolution 1441.
