Crack down on yob culture
Abergavenny Chronicle - 17th June 2004
A SENIOR Abergavenny police officer has condemned the behaviour of a gang of youths believed to have been responsible for a spate of ‘senseless damage’in the town on Friday night writes Laura Pike A gang of around 25 youths, all believed to be aged between 14 and 15, was witnessed damaging doors at the site of the new Llwynu Infants’ School at around 11pmbefore heading down Llwynu Lane and Park Crescent where a number of cars were damaged.
The windscreen of a car parked at St David’s Road was also smashed.
“Police are asking for identification of these youths who are once again responsible for causing senseless damage to other people’s property just for the fun of it,” said Detective Sergeant Howard Salmon.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Abergavenny Police on 01873 852273. Det Sgt Salmon’s words come just a week after he warned that a ‘concentrated effort’ was to be made to tackle the ‘mindless yobs’ causing mayhem on the town’s streets.
Det Sgt Salmon said that although the problem was no-where near as bad as it was 12 months ago, the amount of vandalism and abuse reported in the town over the past month ‘cannot be excused or explained’.
“There can be no excuse for the damage that has been caused to property, the destruction of flower exhibits and the general smashing of windows just for the sake of it,” he said.
“It makes my blood boil when I watch the D-Day heroes on television and everything they fought for when many of them were barely teenagers. Today, there is just utter disrespect by a small majority of mindless yobs who are determined to destroy everything that people work for.
“Our immediate objective over the coming months will be to tackle this problem and I would urge any witnesses to come forward as soon as possible”.
