Walking & the Countryside Around Abergavenny
Situated just on the outskirts of the Brecon Beacons National Park makes for easy access to some stunningly beautiful countryside. The enthusiastic walker may be interested in participating in the "Three Peaks Walk" organised every march. This involves conquering the highest summits in the locality, those of The Blorenge, The Sugar Loaf & The Skirrid all in the same day.
For those who like their walking a little less masochistic you may prefer to take a little more time.
The Blorenge, Skirrid & Sugarloaf
- The Blorenge can be dealt with via two routes. The more gentle journey via Govilon towards Blaenavon provides excellent views of Gilwern, Crickhowell and to the west. Or the shorter but considerably steeper ascent straight up the front after passing under the Brecon & Monmouthshire canal at Llanfoist.
- The Sugar Loaf summit is the highest point above sea level in the area. Conical in shape and quite rocky for the last part, this is possibly the most rewarding climb. In good weather it is possible to see the Bristol Channel from the top.
- The Skirrid is a prettier walk with the first part taking you through the wooded base of this locally called "Holy Mountain". This can provide welcome cover from the blistering South Walean sun in the summer, we wish. Once on the spine the walk becomes more relaxed to the northern summit where caution is advised due to the west facing cliff.
The above mountains are by no means the only source of enjoyment for those looking for tranquility.
The Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal
- The Brecon & Monmouthshire canal at Llanfoist will take you towards Crickhowell to the west or Goytre to the south. In fact if you have a canoe it may be possible to travel further afield to Brecon or Newport
- The River Usk is always a pleasant walk as is the Llanthony Abbey & Grwyne Fawr reservoir areas to the north of the town and not forgetting the castles and countryside off the B4233 old Monmouth road.
- Slightly further afield is the picturesque Wye Valley running between Chepstow & Monmouth and the Lake district reminiscent Talybont on Usk reservoirs on your way to Brecon. Combine these with the peaks close to the town that gave this park it`s name and you have an ideal destination in which to unwind in.
