My grandfather emigrated to the US in the late 1800s. I have been working on my geneology. His family lived in Abergavenny and according to my aunt were the proprietors of a local inn. Unfortunately with the last name of Williams I face a monumental task of tracking my relatives down. Any ideas would be helpful.

I loved visiting Abergavenny many years ago. The Tuesday market was busstling and I lovedd the antique shop in Market Street where my friend and I were always welcome by Bill and his daughters. Oh we used to love our trips to Aber and I must mention the greyhound Vaults the food was always fres and home cooked. Don'y know if much has changed as I have not visited for many years.

Hi to Abergavenny residents,
In response to the last contributors comments, I would like to add a few of my own. There is much more to Abergavenny than sadly the last contributor observed and indeed is aware of. On such a beautiful weekend as last weekend was, perhaps a walk in the Castle Meadows along the banks of the river Usk may have been more appropriate, or indeed a drive to the carpark and a brisk walk up to the summit of the Sugar Loaf or the Blorenge, the views are breathtaking!!!!.
I would agree that there is concern for the youth of today, but you can drive or visit any town in this country and be faced with the problems of society such as they are. Perhaps a visit to one of the other shops in the High Street would have been an idea also!!! As for the Army Careers Office in the town, well, perhaps there are some people who would argue that one of the best ways to catch the attention of the youth of today would indeed be to join the Army, what a very good idea in tackling the contributors opinion of youth culture today!!!!! I am proud to say that I was educated in Abergavenny, I joined the Royal Marines and am now a teacher, thank you Abergavenny for being a great place to live, for the education I recieved and for being one of the most beautiful places in this country.

Visited Abergavenny on Saturday. Sadly this is one of the most unpleasant and dullest places I have ever spent time. The town is run-down and clogged with traffic driven by rude mad people who use their horns rather than the brake and don't stop at pedestrian crossings. There was a deafening roar of motor cycle engines all afternoon.
The so-called castle is a sad unkempt ruin surrounded by ugly fencing which fails to keep out crowds of foul-mouthed local teenagers who climb over the stones and drink alcohol openly.
The 'museum' [I was the only visitor] is under the charge of a morose silent old guy who seems to have lost the will to live. The articles on display look like left-overs from a particularly pathetic jumble sale.
The hightlight of the town would seem to be Tesco.
There is a large army recruitment centre, I am sorry that the local young people have such depressing futures to look forward to.
Avoid this place, it's just horrible.
